Phoebe, the Ice Princess
When Cassini captured close-up views of Saturn's moon, Phoebe, its bright and clear patches revealed a probable cometary origin and a marked contrast to the rest of the moons in the Saturnian system.
Phoebe Flyby Reveals Comet-like Moon
During the early June flyby of Saturn's dark moon, Phoebe, scientists were able to confirm for the first time that the moon is likely a captured comet-like object. The moon shares the same icy composition expected of most Kuiper Belt objects.
Flying by Phoebe
The Cassini-Huygens spacecraft is nearing the giant ringed planet Saturn. It will orbit Saturn for the next several years, sending back scientific information about the planet and its rings and moons. Later this year, Cassini will release the Huygens probe to descend through the atmosphere of Saturn's moon Titan. But even before Cassini swings into orbit around the ringed giant, Cassini has an appointment to take a quick peek at Saturn's outermost moon, Phoebe. |
